As a graphic designer getting the right color is an essential part of the work. When working with digital print this can be a real hassle. There is no universal colors fan to be found. Working in a printshop for several years, I was about to lose my mind trying to get perfect colors on each print, each time. Since no printers are alike and don’t reproduce the same color, I needed to find a easy way to proof colors.
This is to be considered more a tool than a book. The idea was inspired by another book made in the 80’s, very much like this one. To reproduce a color exactly, you need to see the colors printed on the printer you are going to use. And for that purpose this book contains more than 10 000 colors produced with the four process colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). The book has been arranged in a way so that the color combinations naturally progress, but if you get lost, take a look in the TOC. The color swatches have also been made large enough to give a good reading of each color and all of the screen percentages have been clearly marked and aligned so that you can easily tell what percentage each color is composed of.
To take full advantage of the color swatches and the color sheets, you can either print the entire book or just the color sheets you need, on the printer that produces your work. You can then enter the color value of the color swatches into your computer application and check changes on your monitor as you change the screen percentage. The color on the screen will not match the color in the book exactly. The colors in the book represent a final printed color. Idiot-proofing your colors!
